Herbert S Monk enlisted into the London Regiment numbered 8038, later renumbered 282189. He was awarded an MM LG 18th July 1917 for the Battle of Arras. On 16th Jun 1917 when in trenches at Bullecourt they attacked the German Trenches near the Hindenburg Line with the 2/2nd Battalion. The 2/4th lost officers 6 missing and Other Ranks 10 killed, 44 wounded and 101 missing. They gained their objective but due to the division on the left not, B & D Coy of the 2/4th were surrounded and over 70 of them made prisoners. Sadly Herbert was listed as Killed in Action.
