John Whitehouse from Sheffield enlisted into the Tank Corps numbered 95735 as a Driver. He was sent to France and is first recorded as being at the Battle of Cambrai 1917 with D Battalion (later 4th Tank Corps) when he was listed as wounded in action in the war diary with Gun Shot Wound to ankle on 23rd Nov 1917. Later confirmed in hospital in Catterick in Jan 1918. When he was better he was transferred to 15th Battalion where he took part in the capture of the Canal du Nord as he was awarded the MM LG 14th May 1919 - On 27th Sep 1918, on the occasion of the attack on the Canal du Nord and at Graincourt and Cantaing, this man drove his tank continuously for eleven hours. Throughout the action he showed great initiative and devotion to duty, although during the latter stages he was on the verge of collapse. It was largely due to his gallantry and determination that the tank reached the final objective and returned, having performed most valuable service in the assistance of the infantry.
