Fred Peter Batten born 1896 in Buckland St Mary, Devonshire and lived in Colyton, Devonshire when he enlisted into the 1st Devonshire Regiment numbered 30413. He went to France but was reported missing in action, presumed Killed in Action 23rd Apr 1917. The battalion were at La Coulotte when they took part in an attack on the German positions but got slowed down by the wire and heavy machine gun and rifle fire. Due to the wire not being cut by our artillery, it caused the attack to fail with the cost of 244 casualties. Fred body was found later on and he was buried in Lievin Communal Cemetery, he died only 21 years old.
