James Simpson Ripley born 1896 in Armley, Yorkshire was a Iron Moulder when he enlisted into the 21st West Yorkshire Regiment numbered 27946. He served in France with the regiment being noted as landing in June 1916, he is noted as being wounded in action with gun shot wound to right thigh as he is at the 34th Casualty Clearing Station on 18th Oct 1916.
Probably after recovering he is transferred to the Royal Defence Corps numbered 77635 and survives the war and is awarded a pension for his injuries.
