WW1 British & Victory Medals named 241239 CPL A GANDY MIDD'X R & Memorial Plaque named ALFRED GANDY.
Alfred Gandy born in Wargrave, Berkshire in 1883 and was living in Southall, Middlesex and was in the 3/8th Middlesex Regt TA numbered 4500 when he attested for service overseas on 15th Mar 1915 renumbered 241239. After training on 19th Sep 1917 he landed in France with the 1/8th Battalion, before being transferred to the 23rd Battalion on 27th Apr 1917. He was appointed an unpaid L/Cpl on 15th Dec 1917, then Cpl on 15th Mar 1918 and L/Sgt on 1st Apr 1918.
On 9th Aug 1918 Alfred was killed in action at Kemmel whilst in the support line digging further trenches, probably shell fire as a few other soldiers were killed as well. He was 35 years old and is buried in Belgium at the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
