      British War & Victory Medals named 53094 PTE J L DILKS LINC R, Memorial Plaque named JOHN LEONARD DILKES, Box named 53094 PTE J L DILKS LINC R & envelope named to Mrs E D Dilkes, 30 Henry St, Northgate, Leicester.


      John Leonard Dilkes born in Sigston, Leicester was a 19 year old grocers assistant in 1911 and enlisted into the Leicestershire Regt numbered 37379 before transferring to the 2/5th Lincolnshire Regt numbered 53094, then transferred over to the 1st Battalion where he was in A Coy, 4th Platoon. On 21st Aug 1918 he was reported missing in action and later his body was found by 117th Labour Corps and exhumed. The battalion were in trenches east of Mailly Maillett when they attacked the German trenches in two waves, with A Coy in the second wave. John is buried in Queens Cemetery, Bucquoy.
