      British War & Victory Medals named 185 PTE R B DAY LINC R & Memorial Plaque named RICHARD BOWSKILL DAY.


      Richard Bowskill Day born 1892 in Retford, Ordsall, New Clee, Grimsby was a Railway Clerk when he enlisted into the 10th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment numbered 185 on 17th Sep 1914. After training he was sent to France on 9th Jan 1916. On the 28th Apr 1917 the battalion at Ceylon Trench attacked the German trenches at 4.25am but they were forewarned of our advance as mortars arrived almost immediately. At 5.30am the enemy counter attacked in large numbers and a lot of our men were surrounded in shell holes or wounded trying to get back. The enemy form into six waves and were soon pushing us back before being stopped by our machine gunners and men were sent forward with bombs to clear our old trenches and push the enemy back into their wood. Casualties 13 officers killed, wounded or missing with 420 other ranks killed, wounded or missing. Richard was confirmed killed in action on this day and his body was never found, he is remembered on the Arras Memorial.
