British War & Victory Medals named 41859 PTE H ALLEN R INNIS FUS.
Herbert Allen was born and raised in Epping and joined the Army during WW1 at Chiseldon, Wiltshire into the Dorset Regiment numbered 12378 before being transferred to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers numbered 41859. After training he landed in France with the 8th Battalion and took part in the Third Battle of Ypres and was killed in action on 5th Aug 1917. The regimental diary states they were in the rear trench and moved to the front trench near Frezenberg to relieve another regiment but were shelled continually during the switch and several casualties occurred.
Herbert was the 39 year old Son of Edward & Margaret Allen of Chapel Road, Epping and is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate and the family stone at Epping Town Cemetery.
