British War & Victory Medal named 26525 PTE H M MARTIN DEVON R.
Lawrence Henry Martin born 1880 in North Bovey, father William labourer and mother Elizabeth, dressmaker. Prior to WW1 he was a gardener and then he enlisted into the Devonshire Regiment numbered 26525. He joined the 9th Battalion and landed in France in time to take part in the attack on 26th Oct 1917 near Ghulevelt, Belgium. He is listed officially as missing in action on the 26th Oct 1917 and then presumed dead on 22nd Nov 1917 & 27th May 1918. It appears his body was found at some stage and reburied at Hooge Crater Cemetery. At the time of his death he was living in Torquay with his wife. He is recorded on the North Bovey memorial.
