Charles Hosegrove joined the Devonshire Regiment numbered 1517 in the Territorial Force 1/4th Battalion before WW1 started. They were stationed in India and then Mesopotamia and then employed in the Defence of the Tigris Line. They took part in the successful attack on the 3rd Sep 1917 against the Turks on the Hai Salient, south of Kut. The attack took a high toll, 15 officers and 403 men went in and 5 officers and 186 men emerged unscathed. This destroyed the battalions fighting capabilities and the spent the war guarding prisoners. He returned with the 4th Battalion to India and took part in the Afghanistan NWF 1919 campaign attached to the 2nd Somerset Light Infantry - rare medal to the Devons. He was discharge 15th Dec 1919 but stayed in the Territorial Forces with the 4th Battalion earning him a Territorial Force Efficiency Medal.
