William Heyes was born in Aspull, near Wigan on 1st Jan 1889, his father was a Grocer in Smithy Road, Aspull. He went to Wigan Mining and Technical School and trained as a Draughtsman and Pattern Maker. After school he worked in Newtownards, Co Down, Ireland. When WW1 came he enlisted into the Royal Engineers on 9th Nov 1914, serving in Newtownards, Co Down, Ireland with the Lancashire Fortress, Royal Engineers TA till 22nd Nov 1916 by then a local Sgt, he gain a commission.
He was commissioned into the Kings Liverpool Regiment Territorial Force as a 2nd Lt and landed in France with the 9th Battalion on 9th Jan 1917. On 23rd Mar 1917 he received a blow from a shell fragment whilst in action which hit his left knee and foot. He was sent back to the UK on 5th Apr 1917 and underwent some operations at Alder Hay. This was the end of his war but he was made a Lt 23rd Feb 1918. He relinquished his commission on 7th Jan 1919 in respect of his wounds and was awarded Silver War Badge B230269. He was awarded a 20% pension for his injuries.
