He was a Private in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and then joined the 7th Royal (Black Watch) Highlanders and was sent to France on 22nd June 1916. He was there until July 1917 when he was sent to be commissioned at the 6th O.C.B in Oxford. He gained his commission in the 5th Kings Own Scottish Borders on 31st October 1917. He was made a Lieutant on 30th April 1918. In WW2 he served in the City of Glasgow Air Raid Warden and also with the RAF Auxiliary Territorial Service at station No4 West Freugh.
